Clover flowers are found blooming in fields of clover plants, which are considered to be lucky charms in some customs. You can make clover flower chains into jewelry, belts, decorations, and head gear! While they'll only last a short time, they'll be sure to make an impression.
Steps
- Find a patch of clovers with plentiful flowers. The most common flowers are small and white. Choose two flowers to begin with (flower A and flower B). If you plan on braiding them, choose flowers with long stems. If not, you can pick flowers with any length of stem, depending on your preference.
- Make a clover chain using one of the following techniques:
- Slit Method
- Insert your thumbnail into the stem so that it makes a 1/2" (1.2 cm) slit near the flower. Try holding the stem with the tips of the index finger and thumb, then just pinch the stem lengthwise with the tip of the thumbnail that is helping to hold the flower.
- Insert another flower's stem into the slit.
- Make a slit in that stem, and insert the next flower into that slit, and so on.
- Weave the ends together when you're done.
- Knot Method
- Hold flower A in one hand and carefully tie the end of the stem of flower B around the stem of flower A. The knot does not need to be fancy. A basic knot works wonderfully!
- Before you tighten the knot, pull it up to the base of the actual blossom of flower A. Then tighten the knot so that it is held from slipping off by the bloom of flower A.
- Continue this pattern for as long as you want. These chains can be made very long and strung around anywhere you want!
- Braid Method
- Braid three clover stems together, starting at the end that has no flower.
- When the braid nears the blossom, tie a new stem onto each braided stem in the same manner as you would for a simple chain; then continue braiding. This creates a braid with blooms intermingled in it.
- Make items to wear:
- A belt: Test the length of your clover chain around your waist.
- Necklaces and crowns: This also applies for necklaces that you want to slip over your head and for crowns.
- Chokers and bracelets: For chokers and bracelets, have a friend tie the ends of your chain together while they are around your neck or wrist.
- Ring: If you want to make a ring, use one medium-length flower and tie the end of its stem onto itself so that it is tightened at the base of its own flower.
Tips
- Thinner stems are easier to tie, but any size stem will work.
- It would be interesting to try to use some of the larger purple or red clover flowers if you can get them.
Warnings
- Be patient, at first it is sometimes hard to get the hang of either of the techniques outlined above, but you can do it!
- Bees love clover flowers. Where ever there are clovers blooming, you will most likely find bees.
